K-Pop supergroups typically limit their musical rollout to a tight-knit schedule, often sharing just a few music videos each year and a select number of total tracks in the form of a project. A “comeback” is often used when a group teases a new song or music video, with fans (or “armies”) eagerly awaiting the short offerings like an ultra-rare sneaker or fashion drop. As was the case for titanic girl group BLACKPINK, who recently broke YouTube’s record for the fastest video to accumulate 100 million views with their latest single, “How You Like That.”
Consisting of Jennie, Rosé, Lisa, and Jisoo, BLACKPINK has shot to global stardom over the past few short years, headlining last year’s Coachella festival while similarly collaborating with Lady Gaga on her latest album Chromatica. On Friday, the four-piece re-captured the globe’s attention, delivering on their versatility by way of sung, ballad-like choruses, catchy rap hooks, and another out-of-this-world music video.
In the first 24 hours of its release, “How You Like That” accumulated 82.4 million views. Six hours later, it had reached 94 million views. It surpasses previous record-holders and fellow K-pop titans BTS for its “Boy With Luv” track featuring Halsey last April, which amassed 74.6 million views in the first day.
The track continues to exemplify BLACKPINK’s unique amalgamation of everything pop music, combining both English and Korean lyrics atop a trap-fueled backdrop that incorporates a bit of EDM flare. They’ve got the swagger, they’ve got the infectious deliveries and choreography, and now, they’ve got the bragging rights.
